Do it anyway!

August 17, 2018

“Do it anyway, Carly!”

That phrase has been bouncing around in my mind a lot this past year. It’s a phrase from one of my favorite poems (below). It’s so hard to get it right. But, I’m trying. I’m trying to remind myself to follow through with those words.

Sometimes, the best we have to give to this world just isn’t enough in the eyes of others (and if you happen to fall into the people-pleaser category like yours truly…well…that can really eat at you). Other times, the best we have to give this world is too much (in the eyes of others), and can foster jealousy. But, we have to just continue to give it our best anyway. Right? Because, in the end, it’s not between us and the world at all. It’s between us and God.

When someone refuses to root for your kiddo, root for their kiddo anyway. When someone tries to avoid saying “thank you” at all costs, continue thanking them anyway. When someone you love continues to act like you don’t exist on social media, keep acknowledging that they exist. When someone won’t stop trying to outdo you, refrain from always trying to outdo them in return. When someone purposefully excludes your child, be sure to include their child. When someone mistreats those you love, try to treat those they love with kindness. When someone tries to do anything they can to bring a little bit of discouragement your way, try to bring a little bit of encouragement their way. I could go on, but I think I’ve made my point.

I struggle with this. Sometimes it’s hard. I’m a work in progress. But, I am trying….because, in the final analysis, I know that God won’t hold me accountable for the actions of others. He will only hold me accountable for my actions (and reactions). There is so much freedom in that thought, isn’t there? There is freedom in showing grace to others…knowing that you are extending the kind of unmerited favor that you would like to receive in return. There is so much freedom that can come from those three little words: “Do it anyway!”

Sharing this today because I know there are others out there who are struggling with this same thing right now. We will never fully get this right, friends, but we can keep trying.

Control what you can control.

Let go of what you can’t.

Give the world your best.

And let God take care of the rest. ♥
