She gave her all.

February 6, 2017

Seven dollars.

That’s how much money Gracie grabbed out of her piggy bank and handed to me after she heard that we were adopting again. She insisted that we use it to help bring home her brother.

That small wad of money she put into my hand instantly reminded me of the biblical story about the widow’s sacrificial gift, and Jesus’ response to it. With that story in mind, we accepted her gift and praised her for it. Though small in value, it came from a big heart. And that’s all that truly matters.

“Sitting across from the offering box, Jesus was observing how the crowd tossed money in for the collection. Many of the rich were making large contributions. One poor widow came up and put in two small coins—a measly two cents. Jesus called his disciples over and said, ‘The truth is that this poor widow gave more to the collection than all the others put together. All the others gave what they’ll never miss, but she gave extravagantly what she couldn’t afford. She gave her all.’ ” (Mark 12:41-44)
